How fish on the map work

  • Each pin is where a fish starts after you load the game. Fish then wander: most stay within 1–2 tiles of the pin, some drift 5–10.
  • On a fresh save, about 3 in 4 pins have a fish.
  • Land a fish and its pin stays empty. A fish that gets away disappears until you sleep at an inn or restart the game.
  • Sleeping at an inn refills about as many pins as you fished in that area since your last stay. Only that area refills. It costs 3–10 yen and does nothing if you did not fish.
  • Giant eel (オオウナギ) and Akame have only one pin in the whole game, both in Area 6. If it is empty, fish in that area, sleep at its inn, and repeat.
  • Cast the bobber exactly onto the fish’s tile. The game checks about every half second.
  • Water marks only hint at size. On a crowded screen the last two fish have no mark.
  • Time of day, season and weather do not change which fish are there.

ROM source and map notes

Placement detail: each area has 256 permanent fish slots, each with a fixed species, a home tile and a size (0 = empty). A fresh save fills 192 of the 256. Pins are the home tiles; fish wander continuously (95% stay within 5 tiles, at most 10) and the game writes the current tile back when the view is rebuilt. A bite needs the bobber on the fish’s exact tile; each fish is checked once per 32 frames. Landing a fish empties its slot. An escape hides the fish until the inn or a restart. The inn counts +1 per hooked fish that reached the landing stage and +3 per escape, then runs that many refill picks on its own area only (empty slot: new fish; occupied: +1 cm; over the cap: emptied). Repeated slots at one tile are separate stacked fish, not a higher spawn chance. Time, season and weather are not used. Source: independent audit of 2026-10-07.

Fish IDs, configured tile coordinates, and terrain images are read from the supplied Japanese SFC ROM. Pins use the map tile centers at 16 source pixels per tile; identical fish-and-tile entries appear once. Different species at the same tile share one pin cluster.

Names outside Japanese are translated or romanized search labels; their name-source metadata is retained in the catalogue. They are not all verified Thai-patch strings.
